Richards, McKinney Lead Bulldogs to Victory

The Boiling Springs softball team’s first game in the 5A Upper State tournament could be summarized in just two words, one hit. The phrase fits perfectly because it was a one hit shutout performance from Calli Richards on the mound and one hit from Grace McKinney that helped propel the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Clover Blue Eagles.

The Bulldogs offense got it’s only run of the night in their second plate appearance as third baseman Grace McKinney connected on a solo homerun to straight centerfield to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead. “I was just really hoping for a good solid base hit,” said McKinney when talking about her homerun, “Then I rounded second and saw everyone’s excitement and making the homerun sign and I just said ‘Alright!” When asked about the homerun after the game Boiling Springs head coach Randy Piazza said, “I was really proud of her there, it was a big hit. We left a lot of runners on base as a team but those nights happen. Both of these pitchers had great performances tonight.”

On the defensive side of the ball the Bulldogs really excelled as Calli Richards tossed a one-hit shutout while striking out six batters. With that performance Boiling Springs pitchers have now struck out twenty-eight batters in the playoffs. “It feels great having the performance we had tonight because we know we’re playing well heading into our next game,” said Richards.

The Bulldogs next game in the 5A Upper State tournament will be Monday night as they will travel to the winner of the Byrnes and JL Mann game that will be played at Byrnes on Saturday at 2:30 PM.
