Richards Dominates Rock Hill

The Boiling Springs softball team started out the 5A playoffs with a 6-1 victory over Rock Hill behind an impressive pitching performance from senior Calli Richards. “Calli had to work tonight but she stuck with the game plan and went with it,” said Bulldogs head coach Randy Piazza, “I’m proud of the effort tonight from her and the whole team.” Richards surrendered her only hit and run in the first inning and didn’t allow another Rock Hill hit the rest of the way. “After that first hit I just got myself together and told myself to keep your pitches in the zone,” said Richards.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning the Boiling Springs bats got to work in the second inning. In the bottom of the second Logan Webb was able to reach base on a single and Moriah Gomez reached base on an error and both scored on a hit by Emma Williams that glanced off the glove of the Rock Hill centerfielder giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Williams would also score on a double by Richards putting the Bulldogs ahead 3-1 after two.

Grace McKinney added to the Boiling Springs lead after she reached base on a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Nattalie Hazzard. The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the fourth inning as Ragan Bristol and Emily Hill both scored putting the Boiling Springs lead at 6-1. “We made a lot of contact with the ball tonight and the girls really worked hard on that this week and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Coach Piazza.

The story of the night though was the outstanding pitching performance of Richards who allowed only two balls to leave the infield after the first inning and struck out seven Rock Hill batters. When asked after the game about the mentality of the team after getting their first win in the playoffs Richards said, “With the chemistry we have on this team this year it’s amazing and we’re just looking forward to the rest of the playoffs.”

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday night at home against Easley at 6:00 PM.
