Rebels Improve to 2-0 in Upper State

The battle for home field advantage in the Upper State tournament was up for grabs between two Region III-5A foes on Monday night and it was the Byrnes Rebels who captured a 5-0 victory over Boiling Springs behind an impressive pitching performance from Kasey Widmyer. Widmyer pitched five and two-thirds innings of shutout softball while registering six strikeouts on Monday night. “I thought Kasey threw great tonight,” said Byrnes head softball coach Brandi Aiken, “She stepped up and threw one of her better games tonight. She really came up big tonight against a tough lineup.”

While Widmyer was impressing on the mound it was two big innings on the offensive side of the ball that saw the Rebels score all of their runs. In the first inning after seeing Tatum Arboleda and Haven Pesce reach base it was a single from Amber Campbell that would bring both runners home and give the Rebels a 2-0 lead after one. “Amber getting that hit in the first inning to get the first two runs in was huge for us,” said Coach Aiken.

The Rebels would add to their lead in the fifth inning as Krista Whiteside, Widmyer, and Pesce all scored putting the Byrnes lead at 5-0. In the top of the sixth inning with one out the Rebels had a scary moment as Widmyer was struck in the leg on a line drive back up the middle and was replaced on the mound by Haylee Whitesides. Whitesides would complete the shutout for the Rebels getting the last four outs of the game.

Boiling Springs will now travel to Clover on Wednesday in an elimination game. The Rebels will return to action on Friday as they await the winner of the Boiling Springs and Clover game, where either team will have to defeat the Rebels twice to advance to the state championship series. When asked about how she feels about her team’s current positioning in the Upper State tournament Coach Aiken said, “It’s good to know that a team will have to come here and beat us twice but we obviously know no matter which team it is, it’s going to be a really good team. I’m just proud that we’ve put ourselves in the best position we can to win on Friday.”
