Bulldogs Softball District Champions

Boiling Springs softball on Wednesday night claimed the 5A District III Championship by defeating the Hillcrest Rams 10-0 behind an outstanding pitching performance from Shelby Griffin and a six run first inning by the Bulldogs offense. “I’m really proud of how they’re staying in the zone. When you do things like that good things will happen at the plate like they did for us tonight,” said Bulldogs head coach Randy Piazza, “These last three games I’ve been very pleased with the contact we’ve been making.”

The Bulldogs offense jumped on the Rams early as Calli Richards, Grace McKinney, Victoria Beland, Logan Webb, Emma Williams, and Moriah Gomez all came around to score. Richards started the inning off with a double and was followed by McKinney who reached base on a walk. Griffin would reach base on an error by the Hillcrest shortstop to load the bases. Webb was able to drive in Richards on a single to center to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Williams would then single home McKinney on the next at-bat while Gomez singled in Beland who had checked in to run for Griffin. Webb and Williams both scored on a single by Lindsey Edge and the final run of the inning came when Ragan Bristol brought in Gomez on groundout to shortstop to give Boiling Springs a 6-0 lead.

While the offense was busy scoring runs it was another dominant pitching performance by the Bulldogs that helped lead the way as Shelby Griffin and Calli Richards have both combined over the three games in the district playoffs to allow only two runs and strikeout twenty-two batters. Griffin on Wednesday night struck out eight Hillcrest batters and didn’t allow a baserunner until the fourth inning. “With the way the bats got going early it really made my job on the mound that much easier,” said Griffin, “It feels good to get this one behind us and we’re all looking forward to moving on to the next round.” With such an impressive performance by his pitching staff in the district finals, Coach Piazza said “I’m proud of both of them. We’re never afraid to throw either one of them on any night and as a coach that’s a nice luxury to have.”

The Bulldogs would add four runs in the fifth inning as Williams, Gomez, Bristol, and Richards all scored to give Boiling Springs a 10-0 lead and the victory. With the victory the Bulldogs now move on to the Upper State tournament where they will face Clover on either Friday night or Saturday night at 7 PM.
